Hey guys. Today we're going to take a look at the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series 5th Wheel Tailgate. Now this is going to be a direct replacement for your factory tailgate for most of your late eighties to early nineties Ford model trucks. Now this is a vented tailgate so it's going to give you better vision for when you're driving or backing up, and it's also going to improve your gas mileage. While this cutout is also going to be good for loading any 5th wheel or gooseneck trailers so you won't have to lower the tailgate to get those loaded.Now if you got to tailgate that's broken or damaged or you just don't want to mess with it anymore, a lot of times with these older trucks they'll just be very outdated and just very weathered down. So you can see this one is, it's very hard to pull that handle up to get it open, so it'd be good idea to replace it.
But if you don't want to spend the time or the money to try to find an exact replacement for the tailgate, the Stromberg Carlson is going to do a great job to replace it.It has a heavy duty steel tube construction, which is going to be very durable and have a 100 pound weight capacity and has a black powder coat finish which can be painted to match the surface of your vehicle. And that's what actually Stromberg Carlson recommends to complete the rust resistance. This is going to be custom fit tailgate, so it's going to match the contours of your truck bed. It uses two of these latches to secure to your tailgate while also utilizing the factory pin that your old factory tailgate attached to first. So we just got to pull in on the pins, close it, and the pins are going to lock behind those pins so that you can't unlock it.Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's show you how to install.
And before we install our tailgate there's a bit of pre-assembly we have to do. It doesn't take too much time at all. We already have one side done. Next side we'll just do real quick. First things first.
We're going to take this pin out. We just push in on the sides like so. Pull the pin out. We're not going to need that. Going to take this ring, key ring, and slide that around into the slot.
That's going to be basically your handle. There we go. Just like that. And we're to take this rubber grommet and we're going to put it on the inside of the bracket, face down. We want it to wrap around. Now it is advised to use a type of adhesive so that it stays in place, but for demonstration purposes, we're going to skip that step.Now we can get it in place on our tailgate. You want to make sure that the latch right here is on the outside of this bracket right there. It's going to slide into place just like that. Now we'll take our included hardware. We're going to make sure that the heads of the bolts are on the outside. We'll thread one of our nuts on there. Do the same for the other one. Now you will notice that when it's not tightened down, you do have a lot of adjustability right here. You want to tighten it down so that the latch is level with this rail right here. So just get a flat head screwdriver and then a wrench and then you can tighten that down.Now we're going to remove the factory tailgate. What we need to do first is open it up. Bring it down and we need to get these cables unattached from the truck bed. And how are we going to do that is a tab right here, we're just gonna push in on it and push up just like that. And then do the same for the other side. Now we have both cables and removed and hat we're going to do is pull it off of the passenger side like so, and then the driver's side. And then we can set it aside.Now we can grab our Stromberg Carlson and put it in place. We're going to put that tube on the driver's side first, like so, and then we can get the passenger's side on. So lift up, push it to close it. You may have to pull on the pins just to get her to close for the first time, just so we can adjust. I see over here on our driver's side, our latch is pretty tight. We're not going to mess with that at all. But if you come over to our passenger side, we're going to see that we got a lot of wiggle room, so we're just going to make a few adjustments to our latch and then try it again. So we're going to open it up first, pull both ends and open up the tailgate. And what we're going to do is we're going to hold up with our knee and we're going to come down to the bolt and the nut that we have on the latch system, loosen those up and then push it down towards this base part right here. Let's go ahead and do that.Now we've made that adjustment. Let's go ahead and shut our tailgate. Remember you've got to pull on the pins to get to tailgate to shut. Now you see we did take out a lot of that rattling just by making that minor adjustment. Now at that point, your installation's going to be complete. However if you want to go a step further and attach your factory cables, you can do that as well. Just keep in mind that the hardware is not included, but you can just kind of go around to the shop and maybe find a couple of scrap parts. We just have a basic, a nut and bolt, and then we have a washer around it as well. You cannot use the same hardware that was holding it to the factory tailgate because it was just one screw holding it into the side without a bolt. And another thing you want to keep in mind is this is not a weight bearing tailgate, so I would avoid standing or sitting on it or setting anything dense and heavy on top of it while it's lowered.That's going to do it for our look at the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series 5th Wheel Tailgate.

This tailgate has made hooking up and dropping our fifth wheel so much easier and saved a little time

The price on this gate was great as I haul a lot of lumber and put a lot of weight on this gate I figured hell if I break it Ill just buy a new one but after a year this gate is still holding strong and I definitely put it through hell everyday thank you again it a great gate
Fit was perfect.looks great.did need to get bolts for tailgate straps.
Very easy ordering process, quick delivery, and installation on my 2013 GMC was simple. I even added the logos from the old tailgate. Will definitely shop here for future needs!

Good fit to 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500
Rubber bushings did not provide the fit I was looking for so I used 3D printed bushings instead. Added backup camera to gate as well
Much better replacement than finding an original factory gate as I dented mine up pretty good with a forklift. I pull 5th wheel and gooseneck quite often so this will be a great accessory. 1 person can install this but will help to have an extra set of hands especially when installing and adjusting the latches. I was impressed with how well this gate lines up with lines of the bed. Flush, clean lines. Doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I will be color matching the gate eventually to the truck if the powder coat finish starts wearing off as I do paint, sandblast, and powder coat for a living. As far as dealing with etrailer, I ordered on a Monday and Wednesday the truck was backing into our shop dropping off the gate. Can't get much better than that when shipping was included.

It was real easy to put on. Makes it easer to get in & out of the bed of truck. I can put stuff in the back with out putting the tailgate down.
My original tailgate was rusting out. Since I tow a 5th wheel I decided to go with this tailgate. Received it yesterday and installed it today. I am pleased with the looks and can tell hooking up and unhooking my 5th wheel will be a lot easier.

I am very pleased with the 5th wheel tailgate. I have had people comment on how nice it looks. Best part is it is very practical for 5th wheel towing.
Gate looks very nice and well built.The hing pins are about 1 inch to low. When mounted, gate is above the bed rales. The gate pins are also 3/4" to short. They do not stay on the studs. I will have to do some modifications for this to fit my truck. Was disappointed that it was ordered for this truck and was told it would go right on. Yet it is still a very nice looking gate.
Wish it had 1 release instead of 2 to open it. Did like the insert for the left hand side on the hinge points. Made it fit tight. Will be using it when we pull the 5th wheel camper. Do not need to put down the tailgate when hitching up to the camper. With this tailgate, it will help with fuel economy because of flow thru design. It will hold items in the back of the pickup.

I like it. On the other hand my wife doesnt. She cannot pull out both sides at once to put the tailgaite down. Very stiff springs
The tailgate works. I do alot of trailer and rv towing. It is great for backing under a 5th wheel. I wish it came with a handle instead of having to pull both pins at one time. It is a pain to have to empty both hands to open the gate. Other than that, it's a great investment.
Good construction, fit was good, looks nice on truck. Better than I expected as far as weight and good look, price for this product is really a bargain. I have paid a lot more for a very good tailgate (600 dollars) turns out it did hold up to backing into a pole. Point is I could have had three of these and still have the good fit, good look and function. Keep up the good work, there is a pole out there somewhere just waiting to jump in back of me. Recommend.

Great - the lighter tailgate is much easier to remove for loading and unloading. The tailgate open grill design also makes it so much easier to back and load and unload my boat.
Tailgate shipped quick with no scratches, but top left corner was bent, I was able to straighten it with a rubber mallet ,probably dropped somewhere along the way. I installed it in about 20 minutes, looks good works good, was what I was expecting. Would buy again ,this product from this vendor.

Working great for me, would not hesitate to purchase again.
This was just what I wanted - simple and functional. It was very easy to install. etrailer.com delivered it quickly. All I had to improvise was PVC shims on both sides of the pivot points to keep the tailgate centered. It was easy.

I connected the pull pins with a small plastic-covered wire rope. This made unlatching the the pull pins a one-handed operation and protected the paint from wearing off. I am extremely satisfied. Now if they could put a back-up camera in it to replace the new tailgates - that would be great.
I love this tailgate it's strong, but lightweight and I can still haul things when I'm not pulling a gooseneck great product

WORKING GREAT-STILL HELPING ON FUEL MILEAGE
First I would like to say that the tailgate is exactly what I was looking for "BUT" when I received the product the first thing I noticed was that the latches did not match my 2008 GMC Sierra. The latches would have fit my old GMC, but the 2008 latch system has a pin system like you find in most latching systems for car doors. So I immediately panicked thinking I just waisted a lot of money on something I can't use. So I called etrailer with the problem. They really didn't know what to do with the problem so they gave me the number to Stromberg, who makes the tailgate. They were very good and helpful. As it turns out the old style latching system slips over the pins and the tailgate works just great. So if you are considering buying this tailgate I would say go ahead. etrailer will more than likely get more of my business. They were very fair and had great service. I am a happy customer.
tailgate holds up well - caught my 5th wheel when it rolled off hitch. This prevented further damage - tailgate has only a minor bend. What a lifesaver !!!
I had the tailgate primed and painted and it is holding up well. The tailgate makes connecting the 5th wheel a lot easier and looks good as well. I would recommend this unit as a good investment.
I just installed the tailgate so I can't speak to it's durability. However, once I figured out the hardware and installed the tailgate it fit perfectly and locked snuggly into place. The instructions were not clear and the photos were too dark to be functional. Once I put the tailgate in place and looked at the hardware I could see how it had to go together and where the rubber bumpers had to go. Glueing the bumpers was a very useful instruction.
